Exodus 28:31-43

³¹^(A)“You shall make the robe of the ephod all of blue. ³²It shall have an opening for the head in the middle of it, with a woven binding around the opening, like the opening in a garment,^[a] so that it may not tear. ³³On its hem you shall make pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, around its hem, with bells of gold between them, ³⁴a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, around the hem of the robe. ³⁵And it shall be on Aaron when he ministers, and its sound shall be heard when he goes into the Holy Place before the Lord, and when he comes out, so that he does not die.

³⁶“You shall make ^(B)a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet, ^(C)‘Holy to the Lord.’ ³⁷And you shall fasten it on the turban by a cord of blue. It shall be on the front of the turban. ³⁸It shall be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron shall ^(D)bear any guilt from the holy things that the people of Israel consecrate as their holy gifts. It shall regularly be on his forehead, that they may be accepted before the Lord.

³⁹“You shall weave the coat in checker work of fine linen, and you shall make a turban of fine linen, and you shall make a sash embroidered with needlework.

⁴⁰^(E)“For Aaron's sons you shall make coats and sashes and caps. You shall make them ^(F)for glory and beauty. ⁴¹And you shall put them on Aaron your brother, and on his sons with him, and shall ^(G)anoint them and ordain them and ^(H)consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests. ⁴²You shall make for them ^(I)linen undergarments to cover their naked flesh. They shall reach from the hips to the thighs; ⁴³and they shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they go into the tent of meeting or when they come near the altar to minister in the Holy Place, lest they ^(J)bear guilt and die. ^(K)This shall be a statute forever for him and for his offspring after him.

    he drew me out of many waters.
¹⁸He rescued me from my strong enemy,
    from those who hated me,
    for they were too mighty for me.
¹⁹They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
²⁰^(B)He brought me out into a broad place;
    he rescued me, because ^(C)he delighted in me.

²¹“The Lord ^(D)dealt with me according to my righteousness;
    according to the ^(E)cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
²²^(F)For I have kept the ways of the Lord
    and have not wickedly departed from my God.
²³^(G)For all his rules were before me,
    and from his statutes I did not turn aside.

    and I kept myself from guilt.
²⁵^(I)And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to my cleanness in his sight.

²⁶^(J)“With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the ^(K)blameless man you show yourself blameless;
²⁷with the purified you deal purely,
    and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
²⁸^(L)You save a humble people,
    ^(M)but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
²⁹^(N)For you are my lamp, O Lord,
    and my God lightens my darkness.
³⁰For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can leap over a wall.
³¹This God—^(O)his way is perfect;
    the ^(P)word of the Lord proves true;
    he is ^(Q)a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

³²“For who is God, but the Lord?
    ^(R)And who is a rock, except our God?
³³This God is my ^(S)strong refuge
    and has made my^[a] way blameless.^[b]
³⁴^(T)He made my feet like the feet of a deer
    and set me secure ^(U)on the heights.
³⁵^(V)He trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
³⁶You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your gentleness made me great.
³⁷^(W)You gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet^[c] did not slip;
³⁸I pursued my enemies and destroyed them,
    and did not turn back until they were consumed.
³⁹I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise;

⁴⁰For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
    you made ^(Y)those who rise against me sink under me.
⁴¹You ^(Z)made my enemies turn their backs to me,^[d]
    those who hated me, and I destroyed them.
⁴²They looked, but there was none to save;
    they cried to the Lord, but ^(AA)he did not answer them.
⁴³I beat them fine ^(AB)as the dust of the earth;
    I crushed them and stamped them down ^(AC)like the mire of the streets.

⁴⁴“You delivered me from strife with my people;^[e]
    you kept me as the head of ^(AD)the nations;
    ^(AE)people whom I had not known served me.
⁴⁵Foreigners came cringing to me;
    as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me.
⁴⁶Foreigners lost heart
    and came trembling^[f] ^(AF)out of their fortresses.

⁴⁷“The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be ^(AG)my God, ^(AH)the rock of my salvation,
⁴⁸the God who gave me vengeance
    and ^(AI)brought down peoples under me,
⁴⁹who brought me out from my enemies;
    you exalted me above ^(AJ)those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from ^(AK)men of violence.

⁵⁰^(AL)“For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and sing praises to your name.
⁵¹^(AM)Great salvation he brings^[g] to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to ^(AN)his anointed,

Jeremiah 36:1-10

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah's Scroll

36 In the ^(A)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ²“Take ^(B)a scroll and ^(C)write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and ^(D)Judah ^(E)and all the nations, ^(F)from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. ³^(G)It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, ^(H)so that every one may turn from his evil way, and ^(I)that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

⁴Then Jeremiah called ^(J)Baruch the son of Neriah, and ^(K)Baruch wrote on ^(L)a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. ⁵And Jeremiah ordered ^(M)Baruch, saying, ^(N)“I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, ⁶so you are to go, and ^(O)on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord's house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities. ⁷^(P)It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, ^(Q)and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” ⁸And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the Lord in the Lord's house.

⁹^(R)In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, ^(S)in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem ^(T)proclaimed a fast before the Lord. ¹⁰Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the Lord, in ^(U)the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord's house.

    What can flesh do to me?

When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for ^(D)it was not the season for figs. ¹⁴And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

¹⁵^(E)And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of ^(F)the money-changers and the seats of those who sold ^(G)pigeons. ¹⁶And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. ¹⁷And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ^(H)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? God's Sovereign Choice

9 ^(A)I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— ²that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. ³For ^(B)I could wish that I myself were ^(C)accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,^[a] my kinsmen ^(D)according to the flesh. ⁴They are ^(E)Israelites, and to them belong ^(F)the adoption, ^(G)the glory, ^(H)the covenants, ^(I)the giving of the law, ^(J)the worship, and ^(K)the promises. ⁵To them belong ^(L)the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, ^(M)who is God over all, ^(N)blessed forever. Amen.

⁶But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, ⁷and not all are children of Abraham ^(O)because they are his offspring, but ^(P)“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” ⁸This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but ^(Q)the children of the promise are counted as offspring. ⁹For this is what the promise said: ^(R)“About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” ¹⁰And not only so, but ^(S)also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac,
